Painted pieces are baked in the oven at least once to melt the paint and glass. Glass manufacturing technology dates back at least 5,000 years and a form of stained glass was used in European Christian churches in the 3rd or 4th century AD. C. Polished sheet glass was considered the highest of all glazing until floating glass developed in 1959. A small glass cylinder, the “damn” or “muffin”, was blown with a blowgun, cut lengthwise and rolled into a flat piece. The pattern is placed in a piece of the desired color and with a diamond or steel wheel, the glass is cut into a pattern. After cutting the glass, the main features of the caricature are painted on each piece of glass with special paint called “vulnerable” paint. The painter can apply more paint to the glass to control the light and bring all the colors closer. During this painting process, the glass is kept in the light to simulate the same conditions in which the window can be seen.
This method created windows much larger than crown production, with better surface quality and shine than a wide blade. 1959 Alastair Pilkington introduced the floating glass manufacturing process. As molten glass floats on the molten can, molten glass spreads to a flat surface. This process allows very large windows to be made of deformation-free glass.
There are no industry standard specifications for this type of construction and the product manufacturer should be contacted to address any concerns.
